That seems to be the default behavior of udev.  How do I figure
that out or change it?

eth2 is the actual device.  This used to work with ipw3945 but
does not work with iwl3945.  With iwl3945 (finally) it does work
as wlan but when it boots it tries to send DHCP out on eth2 but
it says 'no such device' or something or stalls until I hit
ctl-C or let it time out.

Let me know what more info I can provide... `dmesg` output is
below `ifconfig`.
