close 530318 thanks dude This was user error. HAL finds the mouse and keyboard though the /dev/input/eventX devices which are provided through the kernel evdev module. Unfortunately, my custom kernel had CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV set to off. Sorry for the trouble! Nick Lewycky
