Found a solution in the German Debian forum:

network-manager > 0.8.0.999 seem to require ppp 2.4.5 (which is in
Debian Sid) to work with the Huawei-Modems.

I installed 2.4.5-4 (which has no problematic dependencies) and it
worked again.
