That's most likely a hardware issue (the travelmate 290 is afaik older hardware).

Do you also get those error messages in the syslog if you run

sudo /lib/udev/cdrom_id /dev/hdc
sudo blkid -o udev -p /dev/hdc

Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the
universe are pointed away from Earth?
