First of all, I installed Ubuntu because I was in a hurry but hal was
not working so I took a Debian CD and started the installation.

I installed it with a live cd by selecting "Web Server" and "Desktop
Environment" from tasksel.

I just followed the instructions and after the reboot, hal was not
working (just as with ubuntu), so I reinstalled, after that I looked at
the logs (because it wasn't working again) and saw this:
"Mar 29 16:40:21 Debian gnome-session[1495]: WARNING: Could not connect
to ConsoleKit: Failed to connect to
socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No existe el fichero o el
directorio"

I knew something was wrong with dbus and hal so I tried to manually
start hal.

HAL: Can't start Hardware abstraction layer - please ensure dbus is
running

Dbus: UUID file '/var/lib/dbus/machine-id' should contain a hex string
of length 32, not length 0, with no other text

I cat-ed the contents of /var/lib/dbus/machine-id and it was indeed
empty so I made a backup and removed the file then I reinstalled Dbus
with aptitude (aptitude reinstall dbus) it generated a new file and now
it wasn't empty, rebooted and HAL worked again.

After Debian had been installed in my PC, I tried to install Ubuntu in
another PC, same problem... took my Debian CD and again, same problem so
I repeated the procedure. Right now both PC's run Debian smoothly.

Regards,
José Luis.
