Sure but if a Finnish ISP does this I have means to complain. If GTE in
UK does this I have no real control over them.

I'm happy to see that you acknowledge that it is a hack :-) Is there a
bug report about this pppd issue already? I'm happy to leave this bug
report open and have it depend on the pppd bug. When that is fixed and
the hack is guaranteed to stay dormant om debian systems I'm sure we can
close bug #626822.
