Package: network-manager
Version: 0.9.4.0-3
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Since I use static IP addresses on my desktops I have chosen to disable
network-manager with rcconf or "update-rc.d network-manager disable" and
configure networking in /etc/network/interfaces like this:

### auto eth3
# allow-hotplug eth3
# iface eth3 inet static
# address 192.168.3.146
# netmask 255.255.255.0
# dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8
# dns-search 192.168.3.254
# gateway 192.168.3.100
# broadcast 192.168.3.255
# network 192.168.3.0

After a routine 'apt-get dist-upgrade' I found that I had no network
connection. "ifup" no longer works, maybe it hasn't for some time because of
changes to the init system. "/etc/init.d/networking start" returned nothing
and had no effect. The "ifconfig" command didn't return anything. Uninstalling
network-manager and its cohorts didn't return networking to my control with
the interfaces file, not even when I purged the package. The only thing I could
do was re-install network-manager AND comment out my ethernet stanza (as it
appears above). Then I had to enable network-manager, at which point I got a
DHCP connection.

I was able to configure a static ethernet connection by installing network-
manager-kde and using sux to start systemsettings as root. The "Network
Connections" GUI interface has no widget to escalate priviledges, XFCE app-
finder doesn't tell you what the underlying program actually is, I didn't feel
like killing my display manager and starting a root xfce4 session. All
programs should tell you what they actually are so you can easily start them
from the CLI.

So now I can boot up and have an active network connection. But the samba
share that I defined in my /etc/fstab no longer automatically mounts. I have
to use "# mount -a" to mount my share or I have to add a cronjob like this:

@reboot sleep  10;mount -a

I'm not sure if this is the correct package to report this problem. BTW, I
didn't see anything weird in /var/log/dmesg or syslog when starting up without
network-manager, it just refused to start my network.
