  What's unexpected (to me) is that NM tries to use wpa_supplicant for
an unencrypted network, but maybe I just don't know what it's supposed
to be doing.

  Keeping in mind that I don't know how wpa_supplicant works, here's my
attempt:

elastomir:~# cat wpa_supplicant.conf
network={
  ssid="FreeWifi"
  scan_ssid=1
  key_mgmt=NONE
}
elastomir:~# wpa_supplicant -D wext -i eth1 -c /root/wpa_supplicant.conf
ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument
ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument
^Ceth1: CTRL-EVENT-TERMINATING - signal 2 received
elastomir:~# wpa_supplicant -D nl80211 -i eth1 -c /root/wpa_supplicant.conf
nl80211: 'nl80211' generic netlink not found
Failed to initialize driver 'nl80211'
eth1: Unsupported driver 'nl80211'
elastomir:~# modprobe cfg80211
elastomir:~# wpa_supplicant -D nl80211 -i eth1 -c /root/wpa_supplicant.conf
nl80211: Could not configure driver to use managed mode
eth1: Failed to initialize driver interface
elastomir:~#
