run loginctl, this should show you the registered logind sessions.
In my case this looks like

$ loginctl
   SESSION        UID USER             SEAT
         2          0 root             seat0
         3       1000 michael          seat0

2 sessions listed

My user session is under user michael, so I use session 3
You can also check your shell environment, your active session is
available as XDG_SESSION_ID

$ loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID
Id=3
Timestamp=Di 2014-05-27 19:42:42 CEST
TimestampMonotonic=36373162
DefaultControlGroup=systemd:/user/1000.user/3.session
VTNr=7
Display=:0
Remote=no
Service=gdm3
Leader=2824
Audit=3
Type=x11
Class=user
Active=yes
State=active
KillProcesses=no
IdleHint=no
IdleSinceHint=1401302104397861
IdleSinceHintMonotonic=46356626170
Name=michael

The important bit here is, that your session is marked as Active=yes and
Remote=no
