Running VDR without LIRC?

Well, the packages are very simmiliar but the remote handling is one of
the very few points where both versions differ from each other.

Yes, you are right, vdr-lirc is the alternative with the highest
priority.

We are working together but the packages evolved separate from each
other a while, so the differences in remote-handling are caused by a
different history of the packages. (the official packages allways
provided 5 different binaries for the different types of remotes)
