You are right. Except that guy called Gunnar Ritter wants to fix bugs:

"I intend to preserve this style in maintaining my port, except for
changes to achieve POSIX.2 standards compliance, features in the SVR4
versions of vi, and, of course, bug fixes."

At least "Terminal too wide" -bug is still there, though.

I just found out that vi-clone called "elvis" implements that open-mode.
If you consider it to be a dangerous competitor, you'd better be
worried. :-)
