Package: vim
Version: 6.2-173+1

I have both nvi and vim installed on my system, and wish for all
commands of the original name (ex, vi, view) and their corresponding
manual pages to point to the nvi version.

The executables are configurable using:
"update-alternatives --config <executable>"
for instance:
"update-alternatives --config vi"
(then select option corresponding to /usr/bin/nvi)
however the manual pages corresponding to ex and view (as well as rview
it seems) still point to the Vim versions even after configuring ex and
view to use nvi using update-alternatives.

I notice the files are symbolic links not to files in /etc/alternatives,
but rather directly to the vim package versions:
 > ls -l /usr/share/man/man1/ex.1.gz
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jan 11 13:35
/usr/share/man/man1/ex.1.gz -> vim.1.gz
 > ls -l /usr/share/man/man1/view.1.gz

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jan 11 13:35
/usr/share/man/man1/view.1.gz -> vim.1.gz

In my limited understanding of the alternatives system, I would suppose
this occurs because the vim package list includes:
/usr/share/man/man1/ex.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/view.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/rview.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/rvim.1.gz
where it should not.

In case it explains why it happened like this, the following listing
suggests vim was most recently installed after nvi:
 > ls -l /usr/bin/nex

-rwxr-xr-x 3 root root 324056 Feb 17 2003 /usr/bin/nex
 > ls -l /usr/bin/vim

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 992632 Jan 9 11:12 /usr/bin/vim

The relevant alternatives file also contain "manual" on the top line. I
think this will happen when the vim package overwrites the
/usr/share/man/man1 symlinks with its own.

I am hopeful you are able to rectify this problem, probably by removing
the files:
/usr/share/man/man1/ex.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/view.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/rview.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/rvim.1.gz
from the vim package if my understanding is correct.

Thanks

AFAIK, vim /now/ uses the alternatives mechanism for its man pages as
well.
