Just as a general note, the Vim user's list[0] is probably a better
venue for general usage questions.

First off, are you using vi (well, some vi-clone other than Vim), vim,
or Vim invoked through the vi name?  I'll assume you're using Debian,
since you contacted this list.  What does the command
  dpkg-query -W 'vim*' | grep '2:'
report?

Second, what are you actually doing (specifics)?  What are you expecting
to happen?  What is actually happening?  These are generally useful bits
of information to provide when trying to get help with a problem[1].
