Could you please give us some information about how you set up your system to use gcc 4.4?

Well so far I couldn't.

As you can see above configure is told to use /usr/bin/gcc-4.2 as gcc.

Which should be fine. In my test with setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH and PATH
according to README.Debian, configure correctly used gcc-4.2.
