zaptel-source - having trouble compiling

I have installed asterisk and zaptel (including source) from backports.

However, when I use module-assistant to compile it, it fails due to
this:

FATAL: Could not open /usr/src/modules/zaptel/debian/zaptel-modules-/lib/modules/2.6.18.2-firthpark.1.0/modules.dep.temp for writing: No such file or directory

My kernel source is in /usr/local/src/linux-2.6.18.2 and I have
specified this to module-assistant with the -k switch.

However, it seems to be putting the package together in an incorrect
directory, which it has not created.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a problem with what I'm doing and would
appreciate some advice - my TDM400P card arrives this coming week.
