You are correct on that we need to provide some support for etch and 
stable-proposed-updates is a good candidate as a possible way to go.

Correct, such packages should be identified and faded away if necessary.

Good. Let's see if Emil has any plans at all waiting for him to respond. In 
case of no plans we can initiate "remove from testing and sid, maintain via 
stable-proposed-updates" procedure.
