Bug#541333: t38modem doesn't work with the standard Lenny kernel due to lack of BSD pty support

Err, t38modem doesn't appear to work at all on Lenny, as the default
kernel config for Lenny has:

"CONFIG_LEGACY_PTYS is not set"

According to http://t38modem.sourceforge.net/

"Version 1.0.0 introduces Unix98 PTY support"

So version 1.0.0 or later would appear to be necessary!
