I could not find a fix - I had to go back to the older kernel. If you could provide further 
information - I wonder if this bug is specific to AMD64 kernels?

There are probably enough  people running etch with asterisk/zaptel that it should get fixed - I 
think there are security issues addressed in etchnhalf so running the old kernel is not a great 
solution. Even after Lenny is out, there will be people running etch for some time for various reasons.

I tried using zaptel-source from unstable - it would build, but failed to work (might have to back 
port the newer version of asterisk? But it might have to do with changes in udev?).
