It's a wishlist bug, which looks like it should be implemented upstream,
and noone else has stepped forward so far, so I'd say go for it.

Since it is probably useful outside of Debian as well, please coordinate
with upstream -- while it is possible to have additional functionality
in Debian packages, it is generally desirable to have consistent
behaviour with non-Debian systems.
