I don't think the wine packages have such a problem. Besides it 
obviously working for me, the package has been out for a fair amount of 
time without complaints.

Then you should uninstall them to make sure they're not conflicting with 
the packages. You could use ldd /usr/lib/wine/wine-pthread to see the 
path of the libwine.so it's loading. Make sure it's the one comes from 
the libwine package, and not whatever you compiled.
