Thanks; I only grepped for "log" in wpa_supplicant.conf(5), finding
nothing.

Ah, that seems reasonable.  BTW, I'm using a USB WLAN adapter with a
Ralink rt73 chip, and until very recently I used the rt73 legacy driver
(that does WPA by itself and does not use wpa_supplicant) instead of the
rt73usb driver that is shipped with the Linux kernel.  It had a similar
problem, see

This issue made me switch to rt73usb and wpa_supplicant in the first
place.
