gnome-terminal is not able to cycle through the tabs and this ist what I
consider the second most annoying thing of this program. I think the
best thing you can do is to turn this feature on by default.

gnome-terminal had this misprinting of characters too. It was in
debian's BTS, so digging in the archived bugs might help to find out
when this issue was resolved and. Perhaps it is possible to dig through
cvs of that time to find out how it was done. In comparison, xfterm4 doesn't allow
jumping between tabs at all here. Pressing ctrl-Pg{UP,Down} produces the
~5 characters in every tab.

BTW, if I start xfce4-terminal from another terminal I get loads of

(xfce4-terminal:9430): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_property_get(): length value
has wrapped in calculation (did you pass G_MAXLONG?)

Can someone reproduce this? Probably I'll submit a bug report.
