Storing prefs in a subfolder of ~/.config folder is a common way theses
days, lots of software do that.

By the way, Xfce uses freedesktop standards paths, and settings are
stored in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME (see
http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/latest/ar01s03.html ), as
this is explained in Xfce documentation (
