I expect upcoming releases will have increasing version numbers. Were there
any problems with exo/thunar regarding this issue?

In a way, although it's ugly, I'd prefer say
> 0.1.999-really-0.2.0alpha-blah etc if they are going to subsequently
> realease 0.2.0.


I think the alpha in the name wants to suggest the alpha quality of thunar
(whatever
that means in Benedikt's dictionary) not that 0.2.0beta r1 and final will
follow.
