Ok. I've stuck with running xfce4-session directly from my own
~/.xsession, but I'll keep this in mind if I run into trouble again.

That seems to have been the problem, indeed. When I tried out the
beta of xfce4, I didn't want to start with a complete system upgrade,
as it was going to take some time and generally breaks some stuff
(notably the kernel upgrade with my binary-only blegh nvidia driver).
So, I did an upgrade (using aptitude) of only the xfce4 packages. I
expected the dependency system to take care of any problems, but
apparently the new xfce4 (beta 4.39 something) doesn't depend on xorg
7.0 yet. At least, it wasn't installed when I upgraded xfce.

I have done a full dist-upgrade just now, and it seems that would have
indeed solved the problem: iceauth now lives in /usr/bin, and no
symbolic links are needed anymore. Other similar problems (xrdb not
found, which was in /usr/bin/X11) are solved too now.

I can't reproduce the original situation very easily, but it seems the
bug (if any) could be solved by making the new xfce4 packages depend
on the new version of xorg. Otherwise, they should look for iceauth
in both the old (/usr/bin/X11?) and new (/usr/bin) locations.

I found xfce4-autostart-editor, and used it succesfully. Nice!
I don't quite understand what you mean with the configurable settings,
I only see "Settings Manager" in the "Settings" menu. I can edit the
menu with the settings manager (desktop settings, second tab, edit
menu). Is that what you mean?

Kind regards,
