Ok, it's happening again now. Using gnome-terminal, but it happens with
xfce4-terminal, too. What happens is the little resize box appears but
it is not redrawing when I resize the window: it displays the current
size and that's it.

I think it may be related to compositing. When I roll-up a window, it
remains visible on the screen, expanded, as an artifact. If I drag other
windows over that region it redraws. I'm attaching a screenshot of this
happening (the window with the email in is rolled-up, as you can see
from the top bar, but has remained visible on the desktop).

In Settings -> Window Manager Tweaks I have "Enable Display Compositing"
ticked and "Show shadows under regular windows" ticked. I've just
unticked it and the problem remains (do I need to restart my xfce
session for it to take effect?)
