I'm wondering if it could be due to xcb deadlocking stuff. You have a
pure lenny install running? I don't have one here, but will be able to
test tomorrow.

In the meanwhile, could you try running xfce4-panel from a terminal,
with LIBXCB_ALLOW_SLOPPY_LOCK=1 exported before? (that should be the
default, but…)
