A Debian install iso can be put a usb stick with:

   cat <iso> > /dev/sdX

The device is recognised by udisks and in dmesg and can be mounted with,
say, pmount. However, there is no icon shown on the desktop for the
device. An icon does appear for the same device when inserted on a
machine running Squeeze.
