That's not exactly that. The default session (in case nothing is
selected) is xfce. In your case, it doesn't exist, so /etc/X11/Xsession
fails to select anything, I guess.

Could you try removing xfce from:

user-session=xfce

in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and report back?
