I tried to reproduce, and it seems to work fine here, so indeed it might
be related to something else in the stack: gstreamer, alsa or your card
drivers.

Something I noticed with playing here is that, for example, my PCM
channel cannot be muted in alsamixer (M doesn't do anything). When I
mute in xfce4-mixer, what it does is to set the volume to 0%, which is
seen in the alsamixer UI. Now, when un-muting in xfce4-mixer, nothing is
done, and to get the sound back you need to change the volume so it gets
back “near” where it was before the “mute”.

I'm not sure where the inconsistency lies but it'd be worth trying
something like that on your part: play with both xfce4-mixer and
alsamixer loaded to see exactly what happens.
