I have also noticed this issue in xubuntu 12.10, if I lock the screen 
using the keyboard shortcut, it fades out and produces the lock screen. 
But if I simply close the laptop lid, when I open it it will show the 
desktop and fade to the lock screen. So the screen closing interrupts 
the lock screen completing and it finishes when the machine wakes. I 
don't think this means the screen is unlocked when the laptop wakes, it 
just hasn't completed the nice fade out and brought up the lock screen. 
Perhaps you could remove the fade out when you close the lid.

Sorry for chipping in to someone else's bug, but I had noticed this 
behavior as well, and I thought I could help :)
