Really - Debian seems to be a distribution that is intended for server use only. ;-)

Yes - but this only works when it is the same output device.

Maybe - but there could be an additional point of view:
The use of the existant hardware has nothing to do with the smartness of the X-system.
When the hardware can only be controlled direct in the underlaying Linux the use XFCE can be doubtful.

In Debian I have only the attached volume control.
It seems that the volume control in the article is the pavucontrol.
So using Pulseaudio seems to be the only way to control different sound devices in XFCE.
I will not test it in XFCE but i can say it works in KDE.
