yup, it's gnome-shell's fault.

/usr/share/xsessions$ ls
gnome-flashback-compiz.desktop    kodi.desktop
LXDE.desktop  openbox.desktop
gnome-flashback-metacity.desktop  lightdm-xsession.desktop
mate.desktop  xbmc.desktop

Could debian-gnome maintainers look at it ?
