Understood. I am reporting a bug because my post to the debian-user
mailing list produced one response that didn't explain the problem and
described an overkill solution for a different make and model computer.

Do you know of a better Debian support list?

I have seen EDID error messages in dmesg(1) with this and other
computers, mostly under Wheezy. Bypassing the KVM eliminated those
problems. Under Jesse, I see few to no EDID error messages with this
computer.

The external monitor was set correctly prior to the bug, after the bug,
with the KVM connected, and with the KVM bypassed:

Application Menu -> Settings -> Display:

Use this output checked

Resolution 1920x1080

Refresh rate 60.0 Hz

Rotation Normal

Reflection None

Behavior is the same when the laptop is powered down, KVM bypassed, and
the laptop is powered up and booted.

It is interesting to note that the image displayed is the same image as
the graphical login manager, and does not appear under the list of
wallpapers:

Application Menu -> Settings -> Desktop -> Background -> Images

I have attached a logged in screenshot FYI.
