[Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#865121: LightDM restarts X.org when switching from an unmanaged X11 tty

Package: lightdm
Severity: important
Version: 1.18.3-1

Hi all,

I am working on porting Unity Greeter to greeter that is not so
heavily tied to Ubuntu, the name is Arctica Greeter. While doing my
work, I stumbled over a weird phenomenon.

My development environment is this:

Greeter Testing:
----------------

Let LightDM with Arctica Greeter come up at boot time as default
display manager.

Development:

------------

  1. Text based console login on tty1
  2. STARTUP=i3 startx

$SOMETHING_ELSE:

----------------

I often have open consoles on tty2-tty6.

Then I switch between CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-Fn, ..., CTRL-ALT-F7 for
development and testing.

What do I expect?
------------------

My expectation is that whatever combination sequence of CTRL-ALT-F1
... CTRL-ALT-Fn ... CTRL-ALT-F7 I press, I can easily switch between
sessions, without disruptions, etc.

What do I observe?

However, when I switch back from tty1 (i3 X11 session) to tty7
(LightDM + Arctica Greeter) directly (not via a text based tty), the
X.org processes dies immediately (or gets killed, I don't know) and
X.org restarts anew. The greeter appears, I can log in.

The problem is that this restart of X.org on tty7 happens while
LightDM is still showing the greeter, BUT ALSO WHEN I AM LOOGGED INTO
A DESKTOP SESSION.

At first, I was searching for a reason of this issue in the Arctica
Greeter code, but later I tried other greeters. They show the same
behaviour.

Has anyone observed this issue, too? Any idea how to track this down?

Thanks+Greets,
Mike
