[Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#866162: Screen Corruption after Suspend, Xfce 4.12, Debian Stretch, 4.9 Kernel, ATI Radeon Discrete GPU

Tue Jun 27 19:37:08 UTC 2017
Package: xfce4
Version: 4.12.3
My graphics become corrupted after suspend on the 4.9 kernel. To fix it, I
simply hit ctrl+alt+d twice to toggle "Show Desktop." Another option is to
toggle a menu or click on various spots on the desktop. Then the graphics
are fine. Attached is a screenshot of the issue. I have three monitors. It
is still an issue if fewer monitors are connected.
I have installed the 3.16 kernel from the Debian Jessie repository. The
screen corruption is not an issue at all with that kernel version. My
graphics card is an ATI Radeon 5450
<https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004N3BH0C> with the "contrib" and
"non-free" repositories enabled and firmware-linux-nonfree libgl1-mesa-dri
xserver-xorg-video-ati installed. I compiled the Linux kernel 4.10.8 from
kernel.org. The same graphics issue exists for that kernel version.
Furthermore, I have Xubuntu 16.04 installed at work with kernel version
4.4. At work I have a XFX Radeon R5 220 Core Edition 1GB DDR3 PCI Express
Graphics Card. The same screen corruption issue exists on that system as
well. (I would be glad to send those full hardware specs if requested.) On
my Debian install (at home), I installed Cinnamon desktop. With the 4.9
kernel, there is no graphics corruption after suspend. Of course there is
no graphics corruption after suspend in a tty session as well. So, it has
to do with Xfce 4.12 and the 4.x kernels. I update my system daily. So, all
software is the most current version.
Below is the comparison of ~/.xsession-errors after suspend for the two
kernel versions.

Initially I had no error in .xsession-errors after using sudo systemctl
suspend. However, when I received the (xfce4-session:1315) error I had used
the Xfce Power Manager to suspend. The last cat .xsession-errors was when I
had the Chromium browser and Xfce4 Terminal both open at the same time.
Attached are the dmesg outputs for both kernels. I did the following steps
with only Xfce4 Terminal open.
977 sudo dmesg -C
978 sudo systemctl suspend
979 sudo dmesg >> ~/Desktop/dmesg-output-kernel-4.9-after-suspend.txt
997 sudo dmesg -C
998 sudo systemctl suspend
999 sudo dmesg >> ~/Desktop/dmesg-output-kernel-3.16-after-suspend.txt
Attached is the output of lshw with full system specs. I only use my
discrete card. I do not use the integrated graphics card. There is no
graphics issue with the integrated graphics card.
Attached is the output of reportbug -q --template -T none -s none -S normal
-b --list-cc none -q xfce4
Additional notes, if I suspend the system myself when the 4.9 kernel first
boots, then the system will freeze for about 20 seconds and then unfreeze
and not suspend. This is with Xfce Power Manager. The same freeze issue
happened when suspending with the graphical tool in Cinnamon. When I
suspended with systemctl it froze as well but eventually suspended. (It
kind of halfway suspended. The light was not slowly blinking on my PC.) I
am not sure if this is related.
Very often if no windows are open and it is the first suspend then no
screen corruption happens.
I am glad to send any other needed information or run any needed tests. I
am glad to contribute to the Debian community as I very much appreciate
your hard work to create a great system.
Thank you,
Brock
