Then again, this issue comes up more often on kfreebsd-amd64 (4x over the past 3 uploads and 2 givebacks) than on any other architecture (maximum once per architecture so far over the past 3 uploads). Raising the severity because it surely can't go on like this forever, especially not with the current failure rate on kfreebsd-amd64. Investigation so far suggests that not the tests itself hang, but the script parsing and executing them. Sorry yes (it was reported on a different machine) - I always try to remove that misleading info (and wish reportbug had a setting to do so as I am rarely able to report bugs on the machine they occur on). This was on an arm64 unstable buildd. So no you wouldn't be able to reproduce it on amd64 and/or wheezy. anyway, this has been rendered moot by the new upload (5.0.5-2) which failed to build on arm64 for different reasons. https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=zsh&arch=arm64&ver=5.0.6-1&stamp=1410850102 The classic 'config.sub, guess out of date' symptom: dh_auto_configure -B obj -- --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man --bindir=/bin LDFLAGS="-Wl,--as-needed -g -Wl,-z,relro" --infodir=/usr/share/info --enable-maildir-support --enable-max-jobtable-size=256 --enable-etcdir=/etc/zsh --enable-function-subdirs --enable-site-fndir=/usr/local/share/zsh/site-functions --enable-fndir=/usr/share/zsh/functions --with-tcsetpgrp --with-term-lib="ncursesw tinfo" --enable-cap --enable-pcre --enable-readnullcmd=pager --enable-custom-patchlevel=Debian --enable-additional-fpath=/usr/share/zsh/vendor-functions,/usr/share/zsh/vendor-completions --disable-ansi2knr configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --disable-maintainer-mode, --disable-dependency-tracking, --enable-max-jobtable-size configuring for zsh 5.0.6 Invalid configuration `aarch64-linux-gnu': machine `aarch64' not recognized configure: error: /bin/bash ../config.sub aarch64-linux-gnu failed Now this is odd because the package runs dh_autoreconf. However it clearly isn't working, and the top-level config.sub remains too old for newer arches. I don't understand why this is because the package appears to use automake as well as autoconf so these files should get updated. (see https://wiki.debian.org/Autoreconf for explanation). I'm afraid I have not got to the bottom of this, but the simple expedient of running dh_autotools-dev_updateconfig as well as autoreconf fixes the problem and it builds. A patch for this is attached. This is perhaps not perfect, but is a small and simple fix which does no harm. I will upload a package with this fix to delayed/7 soon in order to get it built in the new arches. It's doing this: dh_autoreconf -v find ! -ipath "./debian/*" -a ! \( -path '*/.git/*' -o -path '*/.hg/*' -o -path '*/.bzr/ *' -o -path '*/.svn/*' -o -path '*/CVS/*' \) -a -type f -exec md5sum {} \; > debian/autoreconf. before autoreconf -f -i find ! -ipath "./debian/*" -a ! \( -path '*/.git/*' -o -path '*/.hg/*' -o -path '*/.bzr/ *' -o -path '*/.svn/*' -o -path '*/CVS/*' \) -a -type f -exec md5sum {} \; > debian/autoreconf. after and $ autoreconf -f -i -v gives: autoreconf: Entering directory `.' autoreconf: configure.ac: not using Gettext autoreconf: configure.ac: not using aclocal autoreconf: configure.ac: tracing autoreconf: configure.ac: not using Libtool autoreconf: running: /usr/bin/autoconf --force autoreconf: running: /usr/bin/autoheader --force autoreconf: configure.ac: not using Automake autoreconf: Leaving directory `.' So it really is just doing the autoconf/header updates, not the automake/gettext/libtool updates. So that explains the failure to update sub and guess. I'm not sure if it's _right_ because there is a Makefile.in at the top level, which by my understanding means automake is in use and corresponding updates should occur. No Makefile is created at this point. And yet the package builds. I'd have to investigate further to find out if this is deliberately slightly unusual autotools usage or if something is just wrong. > > I will upload a package with this fix to delayed/7 soon in order to > > get it built in the new arches. Message-ID: <20140920235406.GR6495@sym.noone.org> Hi, (Short summary: I'd like to have Clint to state a license for the packaging, preferably the same license as Zsh itself, and the remaining copyright holders, i.e. the currently active Debian Zsh Team to agree on this license.) While trying to convert zsh's debian/copyright file to the machine-readable DEP5 format (http://dep.debian.net/deps/dep5/), I noticed that there's so far no statement under what license the packaging itself is. The copyright clearly differs from upstream (different persons, with overlaps), but there was never a statement about its license. According to https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-docs.html#s-copyrightfile the files should have a license. (See also the policy's upgrade-checklist, changes for 3.9.3: "`debian/copyright' is no longer required to list the Debian maintainers involved in the creation of the package (although note that the requirement to list copyright information is unchanged).") From what I gathered from http://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian-archive/20090802T004153Z/debian/dists/buzz/main/source/shells/zsh-2.6-beta13-2.diff.gz (the oldest know source code of Debian's zsh package), there's not much left from the initial package except most of debian/copyright itself. So I guess it's mostly up to Clint who started the packaging in its current form to state its license. If there's no big opinion on this by Clint, I suggest to declare the packaging under the same license as Zsh itself. In that case I'd exchange the current debian/copyright file with the following file for a start: ---8<--- Format: http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/ Upstream-Name: Zsh (Z Shell) Upstream-Contact: zsh-workers at zsh.org Source: http://www.zsh.org/pub/ ftp://ftp.zsh.org/pub/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/zsh/files/ Files: * Copyright: 1992-2014 The Zsh Development Group (Paul Falstad, Richard Coleman, Zolt?n Hidv?gi, Andrew Main, Peter Stephenson, Sven Wischnowsky, and others). Main difference is s/software/documentation/ and the phrase "and the following two paragraphs" plus these two paragraphs being missing. I'll work that out, too. Hi Axel, you didn't miss anything, I was busy these last few weeks so I didn't get much time to work my Debian packages. I think the most important is that we won't put theme_chooser.sh in /usr/bin because themes have a wide range of dependencies (ie. git, svn, hg, virtualenv, etc.) and most themes (if not all) assume they are always available, which is bound to result in error messages as users cycle through all the themes. Hence, README.Debian won't refer to oh-my-zsh-theme-chooser and instead will offer the URL of the upstream wiki page that has screenshots of the available themes. Thanks for the confirmation that this is likely not debian-specific. I though still don't understand why this happens way more often on the buildds than outside of the buildds. Since we ran into the issue again with the upload one week ago, and we have to do another upload again before the upcoming freeze for Debian's next stable release, I did another run of building the zsh package again and again (without connected terminal by using "ssh localhost" without "-t" to get closer to the buildd environment) until I run into the issue. And this time I had some luck after something like 70 to 100 successful package builds in one row, but interestingly, with different results as Bart: > Can't say for sure it's exactly the same thing, but here's the stack trace > I got: > > (gdb) where > #0 0x0086e7a2 in _dl_sysinfo_int80 () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2 > #1 0x009611ce in __lll_mutex_lock_wait () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 > #2 0x008efc0b in _L_mutex_lock_4191 () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 > #3 0x08010000 in ?? I was too curious, so I checked all buildd logs with hanging test suites immediately after my last mail. We seem to have either a bunch of different cases or (IMHO more likely) rather non-deterministic places where in the test-suite it happens (which again would be more in line with Bart's findings a month ago). 1) Hangs in the static build at ../../Test/A04redirect.ztst: starting. https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=zsh&arch=armhf&ver=5.0.6-1&stamp=1409479814 https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=zsh&arch=armhf&ver=5.0.6-2&stamp=1411273633 2) Hangs in the static build at This test takes 5 seconds to fail... https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=zsh&arch=kfreebsd-amd64&ver=5.0.6-1&stamp=1409578643 This is the type I have currently here for debugging. It's on amd64 Linux, i.e. not Debian GNU/kFreeBSD on amd64 as the log mentioned above. 3) Hangs in the static build at ../../Test/A05execution.ztst: starting. https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=zsh&arch=mipsel&ver=5.0.6-1&stamp=1409529387 4) Hangs in the non-static build at ../../Test/X02zlevi.ztst: starting. https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=zsh&arch=amd64&ver=5.0.5-dev-3-1&stamp=1409099297 5) Hangs in the non-static build at This test takes 5 seconds to fail... https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=zsh&arch=kfreebsd-amd64&ver=5.0.5-dev-2-1&stamp=1407974756 https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=zsh&arch=kfreebsd-amd64&ver=5.0.5-dev-2-1&stamp=1407936338 6) Hangs in the non-static build at ../../Test/A05execution.ztst: starting. https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=zsh&arch=kfreebsd-amd64&ver=5.0.6-1&stamp=1409502508 So it's clearly not always the test suite of the static build. But I plan to disable the test suite run on the statically build zsh for now anyways to reduce the probability to run into that issue -- as we ignore its result currently. Additionally, I've got some more information about the hanging process in case that helps: Console output: HOME="/home/abe/zsh/zsh/obj-static/testhome" dh_auto_test -B obj-static --parallel || true make[1]: Entering directory '/home/abe/zsh/zsh/obj-static' cd Test ; make check make[2]: Entering directory '/home/abe/zsh/zsh/obj-static/Test' if test -n ""; then \ cd .. && DESTDIR= \ make MODDIR=`pwd`/Test/Modules install.modules > /dev/null; \ fi if ZTST_testlist="`for f in ../../Test/*.ztst; \ do echo $f; done`" \ ZTST_srcdir="../../Test" \ ZTST_exe=../Src/zsh \ ../Src/zsh +Z -f ../../Test/runtests.zsh; then \ stat=0; \ else \ stat=1; \ fi; \ sleep 1; \ rm -rf Modules .zcompdump; \ exit $stat ../../Test/A01grammar.ztst: starting. I'm now at 237 builds with ZTST_verbose=1 in a row without hangs. The latest 10 builds even ran the test suite 10 times in a row per build. I'll let the builds continue for at least a few more days to check if I can still reproduce the issue. But I have a slight hope that enabling verbose output avoids some race condition which is triggering this issue occasionally. If setting ZTST_verbose=1 really avoids the issue, this may already help to get rid of the build failures as I plan to also run the official package builds with ZTST_verbose=1 -- mainly to get some more details where they fail exactly.
