Hello Jan,
thanks for your report, but it would have been more helpful if you had
used reportbug, that includes all the (first level) depends of the
package you're reporting bug to. For example, in this case, we don't
know the GTK+ stack you're using (packages & versions) so I'm just
guessing.

JFTR: On a sid system, it starts with no problem.

are you running this as root in a terminal where you run "su" without
"xhost +" from the user that started X ?

you're using testing, right? I've seen some other segfault from
packages using GTK+ on squeeze, maybe you can try to upgrade to te
latest version of GTK+ package. Also, if it still doesn't fix the
problem, please attach the output of "reportbug --template
gmail-notify" here.
