You still got python 2.3, while the latest supported stable release of
Debian (Lenny) only has python 2.4 and 2.5. The SyntaxError is because
selective imports is not available to such an old python version.

You're trying to install an unstable package version in etch (I
suppose) so it's very likely it will fail.

I'm not going to close this bug, since I'm not the maintainer of the
package, but I believe this is not a bug at all, since we can do
nothing about it.
