do you have this line in /usr/share/python/debian_defaults:

supported-versions = python2.5, python2.6

?

Remove the current maintainer from any packaging activity on python*
and let new fresh blood comes in is the only cure I see; but if we
pretend he's doing his job (which he doesn't) you can look at fixing
