[Quantian-general] Run Quantian iso via the free VMware Player on
Windows or Linux

Tom Short had emailed me about his success in running the Quantian 0.7.9.1
iso alongside Windows XP on his laptop. This uses the 'free as in beer'
VMware Player which is available for Windows and Linux "hosts".
So far, I only had time for a brief trial on my (Kubutu) Linux desktop which
I summarised in a short post at http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/blog/
I had this set up in literally a few minutes, and ended up with
- two emulated Quantian sessions, each at 256mb on a 1gb desktop
- these suspend ram to a diskfile on exit and "rebooted" instantly to the
exact same state -- very nice feature
- offer cdrom, soundcard, usb 2.0 and networking, I only tried networking
which worked like a charm (fast webbrowsing etc)
- I tried openMosix between two instances but no real success there; this
may require some work on the networking configuration.
I had one inquiry regarding Windows as a host, and I'd love to get feedback
on that. My goal is two new short Quantian HOWTOs for Linux and Windows, and
I will need help on the Windows part.
Cheers, Dirk
