That is definitely odd. Try the various Knoppix Cheatcodes (at
www.knoppix.net) and generally peruse the knoppix.net forums/archives.  Is
this some new or exotic hardware? Do you have a particular disk controller?

If you have a working Linux installations, you can probably learn some useful
parameters from it. What does 'dmesg' say about the disk?
