In connection with Rajiv Sahay's question in Vol 10, Issue 2 of the Quantian-general Digest, an open source freeware program called Octave is said to be similar to MATLAB in feel and general capabilities. I can't vouch for that personally, but you might want to try it. Probably many readers of Quantian-general would be interested to hear how its capabilities compare to MATLAB's. (I have not used MATLAB myself, so I can't compare Octave to MATLAB.) Octave is in Quantian, and is also available from Source Forge.
