Rajiv,
Are you aware quantian has octave installed? It is very similar to
matlab, and is likely able to do most of what you want to do in terms of
image processing.
Also, what type of image processing do you do? Because imagemagick
(convert) is also very powerful and can be easily scripted. I use this
for my research very frequently. (Batch process a series of images, add
dates and time descriptors in the image, convert into mpg format, etc
etc etc) This is also available in quantian.
