Hmmm, I noticed here

mention of a "bug in unionfs" in Knoppix 4.0.2 (it's in step 9 of the 
setup procedure).  I don't know enough (actually I know nothing) about 
unionfs - this may or may not relate to some of the oddities being 
seen.
