There were questions after my previous emails about
installling the new quantian to the hard disk. Here is a
mini how-to that assumes some familiarity with Linux.

=========================== snip here ================
These instructions assume that you were somehow able to get
the iso image copied to your hard drive, eg, using k3b or
directly downloaded to your hard drive-- keep track of the
partition where the iso is copied. On our system this is
/dev/hda4

1. get a Knoppix 4.0.2 live CD -- this is the version of
Knoppix that Quantian 0.7.9.1 is based on.

2. Insert this in your cd drive a reboot the computer. We
use the options
"knoppix lang=US bootfrom=/dev/hda4/q*.iso" and
Quantian will be running. (Use whatever language you prefer
and change the bootfrom to the partition where your iso is
located.)

3 Now that Quantian is running, "knoppix-istaller" can now
be run to install Quantian to your hard drive on a partition
of at least 8gb.

4. Even though Quantian was installed, the master boot
record was not updated correctly and we were not able to
boot Quantian on a cold machine. There are several ways to
solve this problem. We used method a.

 	a. if you have a 3-4 gb free partition, you can
install knoppix 3.6 there. (yes 3.6). This version of
Knoppix uses lilo as default bootloader instead of grub.
Reboot and choose knoppix 3.6 from lilo. Edit the
lilo.config file to add booting from the Quantian image (on
the 8gb partition where it was installed). Run lilo as root
and reboot and you should now be able to choose Quantian at
booting.

 	b. This should work but we have not actually tried
it. While doing step 3, running the knoppix installer, after
the configuration step and before the installation step,
stop and save the configuration. Then edit the .knofig file
which contains the configuration info, making the changes to
let grub pick the right image or making lilo your default
bootloader.

 	c. This should also work, but not tested. After
installing Quantian and not being able to boot, boot a
knoppix 3.6 cd, run "sudo chroot /dev/quantian.partition
bash" THere will be a lot of junk on screen hit ctrl-C and
get a command prompt. Issue "mount -o remount,rw /". Now
we are running Quantian again. Fix the bootloader that you
want and proceed as above.

Good luck. We didn't test b and c because there wasn't an
extra big partition on the hard drive and we didn't want to
mess up the successful installation and mbr using method a.
I have real work to do.
