Actually, his description sounded a lot like my first impression of the 
"lang=en" problem.  Basically what I was doing was sticking in the DVD, 
pushing the reset button, and then looking at something else while expecting 
the system to boot completely to the KDE penguin+chalkboard.  But when I 
looked back, there was just a black screen with a blinking cursor and a 
cryptic message...
