| system comes up with Welcome to KNOPPIX live cd
|
| but then, in red :
|
| Can't find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry
| Dropping you to a (very limited) shell
| press reset to quit
| knoppix:

That's odd. It starts the boot process, but then can't proceed. I can think
of two things:

-- your grub or lilo setup isn't quite right
-- your iso may be busted

You could exclude the 2nd case by trying qemu (maybe in FC) or VMWare Player
(free as in beer, not open source -- very useful though) and boot the iso
from a live system to check.

Did you try, just for a variation, the linux24 and minirt24 variants?

| any advice?
| missing something obvious?

You could the try the more verbose debugging options.

Dirk,
 thanks for quick response
also fails on linux24 same way

the downloaded .iso did pass md5 test

qemu is available on fc5, but i know virtually zip how to use it
it did start but eventually failed

the qemu window had several pages of response,
able to page back thru it w shift-pageup
couldnt seem to copy from that window, see below for selected outputlines

[root at bootp /]# cd rh8
[root at bootp rh8]# ls
boot bootrh8 Quantian_0.7.9.2.iso
[root at bootp rh8]# cd boot
[root at bootp boot]# ls
linux24 migrt24.gz miniroots.tar.gz minirt26
linux26 migshm24 minirt24.gz quantliloerr
[root at bootp boot]# qemu -kernel linux24 -initrd minirt24.gz../Quantian_0.7.9.2
.iso
Could not open '/dev/kqemu' - QEMU acceleration layer not activated

in the qemu window several pages of response
so it at least starts but finally fails

<<<< is this last a qemu required part of the execute line?
<<<< is it referring to the qemu virtual disk location of the rootfs or

does this tell you anything re the the quantian.iso being corrupt or not?

I dont have a live cd in my possession right now
ordered/will receive the quantian0.7 dvd and knoppixlive cd soon

but would really like to see if this downloaded iso can be made to work
as per the lilogrub howto, it just seems so neat and clean if it works.

Jack
