In his quantian vmplayer howto Dirk asked for feedback
on trying this method for other os.
Here is success story for kubuntu dapper.
I created the iso from a purchased kubuntu dapper dvd.
Basically much of the work had already been done
from a few months ago when I
got Quantian going in vmplayer.
For kubuntu i just copied the quantian.vmx
and made appropriate name changes;
then ran
qemu-img from my fc5 host in same way to create
the vmdk for my kubuntu
then instead of running knx2hd as was done for quantian,
for kubuntu i just clicked on the install icon
and that was pretty much it;
took all defaults, let it do what it wanted with hdc1....
Networking was up on first boot, unlike for quantian
where i recall i had to reconfigure network.
so now i have 2 vmplayer vms
one for quantian
and one for kubuntu
the kubuntu one is much leaner, 2gb vs 9gb for quantian,
but it works.
both vms see my fc5 printer automagically:
the vms appear just like another machine on my lan
and so the broadcasting of the printer by fc5 host
can be seen by both
in the case of quantian this was almost automatic;
in kubuntu i had some problems [ 2-3 days 8\( ]
with a misconfigured cupsd.conf,
but printing from kubuntu to my fc5 printer is also
now working.
for quantian I had prev got copy/paste
between quantian/fc5 working --reqrs vmware-tools
and that was not avail on the vmplayer so
downloaded vmwareserver and extracted the vmware-tools
then copy/paste works. Havent yet gone thru this for kubuntu.
Also for quantian i setup samba file sharing between fc5, quantian.
Havent done this yet for kubuntu but it should work the same.
thanks again to Dirk for a great howto!
Jack
