maybe you can-- I was following safest path

Actually I want to run off of an exterior usb hard drive and thought

I dont have experience with booting from usb drives;
i think it takes some tricks in general not just for Quantian

Should I make multiple partitions on the usb drive and reserve separate
> ones for each iso?

well that would probably be the safest;
but you might be able to store all the iso's in the same parrtition
once you had the rules down for booting from a usb drive.

How should I organize the partition? Leave it empty?

not sure what you mean here; not absolutely empty, it has to have the
iso
and the linux26, minitrt26.gz has to be in the /boot, in my case itself
a dir in dev/sdb7

There are certain instabilities when mixing programs that I hoped to

not sure what you mean by "mixing programs"
unless you mean multiple different iso's in same partition,
which as i say above might work ok.

My sdb7 is in fact being used for two methods of running Quantian
1) the boot via grub
2)Quantian running via vmplayer,
in my case vmplayer running under fc5, see the howto on Dirk's site
ie
the one Qauntian.iso in sdb7 is doing double duty

I have taken the liberty of including the quantian list for this reply
further discussion should take place thru it.

let me know if you learn how to boot from usb hdisks
regards,
Jack
